Day after day women sit in my chair and tell me they want a rich brown or natural highlights... BUT NO RED! They subtly side-eye my red hair and tell me mine is beautiful, but not for them. Cool. I agree. That being said I think the ashy trend is not for everyone either. I am thrilled women are enjoying their natural beauty if they're one of the lucky one's with "mousey brown hair" sans grey. For the women that refer to their hair that way, comparing it to a rodent, they don't love it. Without knowing it they're asking for their hair to be richer. Richer means warmer. If you say warm they'll agree "as long as it's not red". But if I were to use the term redder or golden they'll likely bolt for the door. Most people have warmth in their skin, at least a little. If your skin is very red, the kind you go to get laser treatments for, then you really shouldn't be walking around with dyed ashy hair or your complexion will look that much redder by contrast. Warm tones in your hair can offset those in your skin making you look better! And mother nature typically knows best, which is why when I paint beautiful highlights in your hair it tends to want to be a little bit warm, because the same pigments in your skin are in your hair. Why fight it? If you want highlights you want a little bit of that. When we were children playing in the grass and got natural highlights they were a little warm and they look gorgeous!
Don't misunderstand me, I have a TON of clients that want ashy hair and get ashy hair. We can do that, I just don't think everyone needs to follow the trend. Trends are about selling you a product, not about you as an individual. If you're tan it's not going to look good. If you're melanated it's going to look odd. You can fight that by adjusting your makeup but most people prefer hair that looks good all the time because when you bump into your ex you still want to look GOOD.
Once a client moves into the later stages of greying, and maybe of hair color, warmer is definitely younger looking. Having a modern placement and a touch of warmth will make you look more fashionable and youthful. That's why a good colorist is worth the their weight in gold (pardon the pun). They'll look at you. Your eyes, your skin, those eyebrows you've been growing back in, your personal style, and your haircut, and they will paint you the perfect shade for you, if you let them. Custom color in every tone just as unique as you.
